New 10gig recorded content limit, when does this take effect?
I am wondering when Ustream might delete our recorded videos to reach the new 10 gig limit. Any extra details on this 10 gig limit would be appreciated, Thanks

3Hi !
Thanks for asking about the storage limit and I've provided some background here for others who will like to know as well.
Storage Limits
For Free Accounts
Ustream offers 10 Gbs of recorded video storage free of charge for all Ustream user accounts. Once you go over your storage limit, you will receive a notification. Recorded videos over the quota will be deleted 2 weeks after you receive this notification. You can also check the storage meter in your dashboard at any time to check how much of your storage you are using.
If you are still over quota after two weeks, videos which are the oldest of your Ustream user account and have the lowest number of views in the past 6 months will be the first ones to be deleted. Videos will automatically be deleted in this order until your account is back under the storage limit.
You can check which videos are marked for deletion to bring you under quota on your Video Dashboard.
Just log into your Ustream account and on your Dashboard select the Channel menu and Videos. Additionally you can filter for, and order by, videos marked for deletion.
Please note that videos marked for deletion are recalculated daily, so if you remove videos from your account, less videos will be automatically marked for deletion.
How to download your videos: http://community.ustream.tv/ustream/t...
How to delete your videos: http://community.ustream.tv/ustream/t...
For Pro Broadcasting Accounts
Ustream Pro Broadcasting accounts have unlimited video storage.
How can I tell how much storage I am using?
For Free Accounts:
1. Login to your account
2. Go to Dashboard
3. Go to Channel > Videos
You will see a video storage meter there.
How much is a Gb? How many videos can I store total?
It depends on the bitrate you broadcast at and how long your videos are. The size of each video in your account is listed next to the video.
Will Ustream warn me if I am going to go over the storage limit?
Yes, once you have reached 100% or greater of your storage limit, we will send you an email letting you know. In addition, you can always check your storage meter in your user dashboard to see how much of your storage you are using.
Is the storage amount per channel or for all my channels?
Ustream will calculate the storage use of your Ustream user account (of all the channels) on the last day of your billing cycle and if it is under the storage use included in your Pro Broadcasting plan, you will not be charged any extra.
If I am already over the limit now, does this mean I will get charged extra? When will I have to pay for storage overuse?
For free accounts, amounts over the limit will be automatically deleted.
How will I know how large of a video file will be created from the stream?
What affects the size of the video is two factors:
1. How high of a bitrate you broadcast at. Average for Ustream is about 400 - 800 Kbps .
2. How long your video is.
The size of your video is
bitrate x length / 8 / 1024 / 1024
The division by 8 is because bandwidth is measured in bits , but storage is measured in bytes and there are 8 bits to a byte.
So if you have a video that is one hour long at 596k (Medium Bandwidth Setting in Ustream Producer), the math would look like this:
596 x 60 (seconds) x 60 minutes = 2,145,600 kilobits
/ 8
= 268,200 KiloBytes
/1024
=261.9 MegaBytes
/1024
= 0.25 GigaBytes
So with one one hour video at 596Kbps, you would be using 0.25 GB.
But if you broadcast a higher bitrate, your storage will be used up faster.
One hour of video at 896kbps (High Bandwidth Setting in Ustream Producer) would look like this:
((896 x 60 x 60) / 8) / 1024 = 393.75 MB
393.75 MB / 1024 = 0.38 GB
So you're looking at approximately 40 hours of video at 596k bitrate and 25 hours of video at 896k bitrate.
These numbers will never be entirely exact because most encoders (including our web broadcast console, Producer and FMLE) use variable bitrate encoding , so the bitrate actually fluctuates up and down from the bitrate you set.
So the easiest way is probably just look at the size of your video in your video dashboard and remember that the longer and higher quality your videos, the more space they will take up.

So does that mean we have 2 weeks from today to download all our recordings before you begin deleting them?

hi, yes, if you are over the limit as of today, then yes, two weeks from today.

I just received the message that free storage is now limited. I need to know:
1. How can I find out how much total space (GBs) I already have used?
2. Is there any way to download in mass?
I have 317 programs stored according to your statistics, and I need to keep them all (somewhere). This is a church program and our budget is limited. I also only have a couple of weeks before you will delete them, and I may not have enough time to get them all moved in time. I'm deeply concerned, though we still love your service and want to continue. Can you give me some guidance?

1. To find out how much space you are currently using:
Login to your account at Ustream.tv
Click your username in the top right and choose Go to Dashboard from the drop down
Click on the videos under the channel section. If you have more than one channel, ensure you have the correct channel selected by using the drop down next to the word channel.
At the top of your videos list, you will see a meter showing you how much storage you are using.
If you have any videos that are marked for deletion, they will have a red flag in the lower right corner.
To see a list of only the videos marked for deletion, use the sorting dropdown.
2. There is no way to download in mass at the moment, but we may offer this in the future.
Its really quite easy to download them one by one and your browser should allow you to keep several of them going simultaneously.
To download them, click the button below the video you would like to download.
To delete videos, click the delete button and confirm the deletion on the next dialog.

download en-mass would be deeply appreciated ... too bad we couldn't be grandfathered in with a new 10gig limit that we could more easily comply with. I to have hundreds of videos and good thing I wasn't on vacation or else I would be in for a rude awakinig with just two weeks notice ...

What If I don't want to Go PRO ? so at .25 a gig for overage are we looking at 2.50 for 10gig per month or 5.00 for 20gig over limit per month and does this rate apply for people like me who don't see the benefit in signing up for the pro rate at 99$ per month.
-
-
I hav almost 1000 videos. Please allow mass downloads, I don't have enough time to download them one at a time with only 2 weeks notice.

@bluemountain2
@mow700
I'm going to look into if I can get you some kind of extension to give you a bit more time to get your videos downloaded.
@bluemountain2, at this time, there is no a la carte pay for storage only option. So the overage prices listed only apply to those already with a Pro Broadcasting account (or those who sign up for one before their videos are scheduled for deletion) and then if they exceed the stated limits for their level of account. These overage prices are not prices applicable to free accounts exceeding their 10GB. -

1We released today a podcast RSS feed which lists all your videos (including private ones) for a given channel. This RSS feed needs you to authenticate yourself, so nobody else can access it but you, the rightul owner.
With this RSS feed you can download all your videos automatically with capable podcast softwares. Today I'm going to show you how this goes with my favorite podcast consuming software, Miro. Miro is an open source software, available free of charge for Windows, Mac OS X and various other platforms.
1) Visit http://www.getmiro.com/, download the software and install it
2) Open Miro and add a new podcast to it.
3) Enter the podcast RSS url for your channel ( https://www.ustream.tv/channel//0/vide...) and replace the show url in it and click on "Create Podcast" (or just press Enter).
E.g. if you channel url is https://www.ustream.tv/channel/mychannel, then the RSS url will be https://www.ustream.tv/channel/mychann...
Tip: You can replace the number 0 in the url with 1 if you want to download only over quota videos.
4) Provide your username and password to access the videos and you should now see your channel showing up in the available podcasts.
5) Click on your channel and set the autodownload method to "All" by pressing the button (#3 on the illustration) twice.
Done. Your videos now downloading and ready to be watched right from Miro if you wish. Additionally, your downloaded video files can be found in your user's Movies directory, under the folder called Miro and your show's url tag.

does high view counts effect gb's in regards to recorded video storage at all & what exactly does effect gb's
-
No, views does not change how much space a video occupies. Only the broadcast settings affect the size (like resolution, bitrate, codec, etc..)
-

-
since i deleted my videos already that were scheduled for deletion, are my current videos remaining safe from deletion from you guys?
-
Yes. We only delete videos if you are over quota two weeks from receiving the email notification.

i'm thinking about signing up to get the ustream pro broadcasting $99/month starter package, but what i would like to know is does that 50gb recorded video storage allowance stay the same every month as long as i keep paying the $99 monthly fee,or does that decrease, & if so does that mean that i'm going to be paying a monthly $99 bill for reduced gb's for recorded video storage?
-
The 50Gb is the storage space you can occupy as long as you are a Starter Pro Broadcaster. That will stay the same going forward.

Just got an email saying that an account that hasn't been using the recording feature in two years....is over the storage quota...how can this be?
I sense that there was a new limit put in place for free accounts for how much you can record....but why would that affect existing accounts? That hardly seems fair.

I too am in the same situation. I have been a UStream member since UStream's inception in 2007 and have 55 GB of videos stored. I have been downloading m daily but I must say this is entirely unfair and a VERY bad business practice to only give members 2 weeks to download videos.
This is more troublesome since I can not talk to anyone live about an extension to remove all the videos (it's also been admitted there is no bulk downloader available) I have not found a direct email or phone number to contact anyone.
Since I, and I'm sure many others have found out, have not been given enough time to remove videos which have been promoted and advertised on UStream is only going to make others leave the service,,,,,not pay for it.
Who can I talk to about having more time to remove my videos off your server before they are removed???
Thank you. -
-
hi radiodj2
I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused to you from the new policy.
We did actually develop a way to download videos in bulk. Its described here:
http://community.ustream.tv/ustream/t...
You can get in touch with us directly via email at https://www.ustream.tv/support-ticket -
-
Alden,
Thank you for your response. I did actually send in several support tickets, but not trying to be a pest, stopped at 4 without a response.
Thank you for the links to be able to download the videos, but I hope you understand that being given a short time before your work gets deleted becomes very troubling when you don't have anyone to talk to about it, and it takes a long time to download them.
Thank you again. -
-
Alden, would we be able to get an extension before our videos are deleted? Trying to download them but I don't know if we can get it done in time!
Thanks!

Hi Jeff
thanks for reaching out, I will get in touch with you offline. -

yes, i was wondering if you can tell me why when i send my facebook friends links to view my ustream shows all of a sudden it's showing up with a screwed up image where the video[s] that normally play well don't play at all.plus 2 of my other videos won't play at all either & they used to play fine. and now when i go to my ustream site the video player is just showing white & won't play at all,i've tried refreshing the page plus clicked on the compatablity view & this sometimes work, can you tell me what's going on? [i've also clicked on other peoples shows & it does the same thing]

hi ultimate djkk, please start a new thread for your question, this is not related to the topic of this thread.

what exactly is a thread, are you saying click on 'create a new topic' then ask my question again?
-
yep, you got it! Just click on "create a new topic" up at the top right of this page.

ok thanks!

Alden, I have been trying to download my videos but I'm running into issues where they partially download or take 3 to 4 hours to download. I'm not sure if this is due to everyone trying to download videos. Any chance of an extension before the videos are removed? I still have alot to download.

Has Ustream kept back ups of videos that were deleted?
I had a bunch of my recorded videos deleted from this account and was wondering if there is a way I could get them back.
I think by the time my recordings were deleted I went from 250 down to about 10 or 20.
I need all the old recorded videos as they were crucial for my pinball restoration as they were reference recordings so I knew what parts went were and what wires went to what lamps and so on.
Or is all that work of recording them gone for good?-
Hi PBReviewer!
Unfortunately we don't hold on to videos which were deleted from Ustream's system. I am truly sorry that you lost so much work. I wish we could hold on to all videos ever created but since Ustream works as a free, ad-supported service, we can't afford to do that.
Best,

So, for free I can record hypothetically for 10 straight hours and go over the 10GB limit and will have 2 weeks before you will delete anything over 10GB? Thanks, Harry
-
Yes, correct.
-
-
-
-
-
is it best to save alot in chunks or is it ok to record say an hour long at one time and then save? I would think that would take a long time and during the saving time, you cannot keep recording. am I correct? thanks
-
Harry,
There is a 3 hour recording limit on each recording.
You would do the following:
1. Start Broadcasting
2. Start Recording
3. At 2:58 minutes Stop Recording and Save and Tag it
4. Start Recording
5. At 2:58 minutes into the second recording. Stop Recording and Save and Tag it.
This is to make it easier for the viewer to watch the recording. It can be hard to navigate through the longer recordings with the seek function if you just want to see a portion of the recording. -
-
-
-
-
ok thank you. how long will it take for the 3 hr recording to save. that will be the new recording gap time. i assume 3 hrs to save will take awhile, no? thanks
